K.... I already hate the Rangers. But today I heard some news that made it much, much worse. It has barely been 3 weeks since the death of Rangers prospect Alexei Cherepenav. For those of you living in a cave; Cherepanov was a New York Rangers prospect drafted on June 22, 2007. Cherepanov was drafted in the 1st round, 17th overall. Cherepanov died during a game with his team Avangard Omsk of the KHL on 10/13/2008. He had just completed a shift on the ice, came back to the bench, was talking to teammate Jarome Jagr and collapsed. He was then taken to the dressing room where he was revived for a few briefs moments then rushed to ICU but it was already too late. FYI the ambulance that is always at the hockey club's games had departed already on that particular night and had to be called back, therefore delaying Cherepanov's arrival at the hospital by 15-20 minutes. There is much dispute as to the cause of death but most agree that Alexei had some form of heart condition. Be it chronic ischemia or acute Hypertropic Cardiomyopathy. Anyway.... The New York Rangers announced today that they are seeking a compensatory pick in the second round of the 2009 NHL draft, saying "with all due respect to Alexei's family and his memory, he is technically eligible to be drafted again next year," the New York Post has reported. OMG!!!! Seriously?!? This is disturbing to me & moves the Rangers up to the very top of my Teams to Hate On list. They didn't even let the dirt harden on the poor boy's grave...

The part that gets me is the "he is technically eligible to be drafted again next year"
ReplyDeleteUmmm, I may be a blonde but how is one eligible for the draft if one is dead? He wasn't like Wheeler where he chose not to be a Ranger. He is whereever you believe people go when the die.

ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite parts of this story? They were waiting for the "respectful" time to bring it up. Apparently 3 weeks after your death is "respectful." Wouldn't the respectful thing be to discreetly ask someone? As a fan, if you're going to do something dushe-ish like this, I'm okay not knowing.
Most of all, my heart goes out to his family. I imagine they were just beginning to adjust to the tragedy of losing him (if one ever does adjust) when the rangers pull this. IMHO, horribly disrespectful to him, his family and his memory.
