Magical Monday! Thoughts on All-Star Weekend...

Good Monday morning! (I've been up for a while, so I'm overly cheery this morning)

There were many Twitter comments over the weekend about how "lame" the All-Star game is. I have to disagree...

The Draft - as I've already said - was AWESOME. The skills competition was quite entertaining. Highlights of course being Zdeno Chara breaking his own hardest shot record and watching goalies try to out skate each other. Patrick Kane with his video camera on the ice taping everything was hysterical. Loved that. You could tell - during all 3 events in fact - that the players were enjoying themselves. As a fan it was good for me to see that - good for them to be able to sit back and just enjoy themselves for a little while, get to know some of the other players around the league.

The game itself - though not nearly as serious and fast paced as the NHL games we're all used to, was also fun to watch. Cam Ward mic'd up during the 1st period was great. Kudos to Versus. It gave the fans a great glimpse of what his job is like. "Hold on - I gotta block a shot." Classic! I can't wait to hear how Keith Yandle and rookie Oliver Ekman-Larsson's experiences at the All-Star Game went. Keep an eye on my Twitter feed for updates!

Have a great Monday everyone!

2011 All-Star Moments - So Far

Well ladies & gentlemen, the Skills Competition from last night's All-Star festivities is now complete. It was great! Team Lidstrom lost the skills competition so that just means they get to win the actual game tonight....

Here's some shots of my boys last night from around the web...

Coyotes Rookie Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson bing introduced to the crowd in Raleigh, NC. Photo credit goes to David Burke - the VP of Ticket Sales & Services for the Phoenix Coyotes. He Tweeted the photo earlier this morning. (psssst his Twitter is worth a follow too!)

Here's Coyotes Defenseman Keith Yandle unleashing the #Yandlemonium during the Skill Competition. He wasn't in full Yandlemonium mode - he's saving that for tonight! (photo cred)
The NHL All-Star Game kicks off at 2:00pm (MST) on Versus. Don't miss it!!!

UGH!

This post will likely get stuck in the craw of the Winnipeggers (fart noise) but oh well. What else is new? I am already on their top 10 most wanted list. Right under Gary Bettman... I'm prepared for the flood of comments I'll get to reject in the morning.

But here goes.... I'm tired of the on-going saga of the Coyotes ownership situation. Perhaps those fans in Winnipeg (fart noise) should feel fortunate that they didn't have to endure this uncertainty. They KNEW the team was leaving. For Coyotes fans its a daily roller coaster ride. But not the fun kind. One day they're definitely leaving, the deal is falling through, the next we've got a brand new deep pocketed Knight in Shining Armour poised and ready to sign on the dotted line.

If I'm tired of it - how must the Board of Governors feel? As a fan it has successfully ruined the sport I love for the better part of two seasons. We now have people coming into our own arena with "Bring back the Jets" signs. There is NOTHING more disheartening than that. I can't imagine how it makes the players feel. But I know how it makes me feel...

It makes me feel like they want my world to crumble around me. They want the thing that brings me the most joy to be taken from me. And they are even willing to bring signs into my arena to show me how much they want me to have to endure that pain - because they really do wish that upon me. Am I taking it too personally? Well it is personal. Shouldn't they - of all people - not want yet another fan base to have to endure the pain of losing their team? What makes their pain more important than mine? Where do they get their sense of entitlement?

And furthermore... why don't the Quebec fans pester the Avalanche fans like the Winnipeggers (fart noise) pester us? Because they aren't quite the easy target that we are...

Last year - guess who bought the majority of the houses that were sold in the state of Arizona - Canadians. (I only know this because I recently bought a house and read about the real estate market and such... a LOT.) So what are they doing? Coming down here, buying up all the cheap houses and then NOT going to Coyotes games. WTF?!?! You like our winter weather - so you come here for the winter and then want to act like giant turds in our arena? You're here all winter - why not just support them here? You won't be supporting them in Canada anyway, you'll be here!

Well... I only have one thing to say about this whole situation right now and please allow me to illustrate it....

My Lil All-Star!

Well I've told you my Kyle Turris story - so in honor of the All-Star weekend - and our Coyotes All-Star - I'll tell you my Keith Yandle story...

My first full season of watching the Coyotes - the year Kyle spent back in Wisconsin after he was drafted playing for the Badgers (shout out to my bestie!) - was also Yandle's rookie season. Those of you who know me well know that I am easily distracted - especially by shiny objects. There are LOTS of shiny objects in NHL arenas folks!

Anyway... so, I concentrated on one player - hoping it would help me stay focused. That player was Yandle - for no apparent reason, other than I liked the way he tied his skates - he ties them like Gretzky used to, I later found out - of which I noticed during warm-ups one day... (random!)

I watched Yandle very closely to see how he reacted to things, to see what exactly a defenseman did.. If Yandle wasn't out there - I wasn't very focused - I would get lost. I'd go from forward to goalie to defensemen, then back and forth trying to follow the puck. But when Yandle came back I had my focal point back. I just followed my #3 around. I guess you could say he taught me the game. He made a lot of rookie mistakes and got plenty of frequent flyer miles from going between our AHL affiliate club the San Antonio Rampage and here. So he and I both had a lot of learning experiences that first year....

It was his rookie season - it was my rookie season - I figured we could learn together. Now look what we've both become!

On the All-Star Game...
While we're on the topic... I have to give the NHL credit where credit is due. The All-Star Draft last night was EPIC. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment! James Duthie was a gracious and entertaining host. I'm looking forward to the rest of the festivities.

You can follow the NHL's coverage of the All-Star weekend here. The Skills Competition will be on Versus tonight at 5:00pm Desert Dogs time. Can't wait!

Inspired By My New Blogging Buddies...

Today I have decided to post something a little different... I'm participating in Fab Friends Friday hosted by what has become one of my newest favorites sites: FTLOB!

I found their site via the Hockey Wife so I'll blame this all on her - as well as my site makeover - both good things! So I owe her a great big THANK YOU!

So far I have run into sooooo many awesome blogs and bloggers (see sidebar links). I've "met" some amazing women and spent the better part of my time this week reading through some of their stories. I've laughed, I've cried, I've been inspired...

So I'd like to encourage you to head on over to FTLOB and see what all the fuss is about. While your at it be sure to check out Travel Babbles - FTLOB's co-host for this week's Fab Friends Friday!

She has been nominated for FTLOB's site of the month - and she's quite deserving - so go vote! (I mean... just check out her English Bulldog - adorable!)

Enjoy!

Sharing is Caring...

I recently had an experience that I have to place in my top 5 favorite life experiences category. In order for you to understand why - You'll need a little background info:

I started watching hockey when I moved to Arizona in 2006 - so my 1st NHL Entry Draft was in 2007. Kyle Turris therefore, was the first player I saw my new favorite team draft. It was a very exciting moment for me. At that point, being a newbie to the hockey world, I had no idea who he was - but watching him be drafted, adorn my team's sweater and take the stage with Wayne Gretzky and Don Maloney brought tears to my eyes. It's a moment I won't ever forget.

After the draft, I dove into Kyle Turris research. I wanted to know all about his junior career, his stats, his history, everything. I anxiously awaited rookie camp so that I could get my first glimpse of "my rookie" in action. I followed his college career that next season and when he joined the team in early April of 2008 I was ecstatic. I was there for his 1st NHL Game - and on January 13, 2011 at Jobing.com Arena - I watched him play in his 100th NHL game against the Maple Leafs. 100 games isn't too huge of a milestone, right? Well it is for Kyle, and it was for me. Overcome with emotion over the milestone - I rushed to the team store and purchased a #91 jersey to commemorate the day. Now to get him to sign it...

It just so happened that my fabulous season ticket holder seat-mate managed to get passes for us to meet the team after the game on 1/15/2011 against the Ducks (she knows people :) We visited with Ducks and Coyotes players as they passed the group of people awaiting them and chatted with the likes of Sami Lepisto, Lauri Korpikowski, Ilya Bryzgalov, Teemu Selanne and Taylor Pyatt. But I knew exactly whom I was hoping to see. Just when I thought we were about finished for the evening, I see Kyle's girlfriend - whom I've had the opportunity to get to know a bit via the internet - waiting patiently as Kyle chatted with and signed autographs for a group of young guys who were members of a youth hockey team from Winnipeg. She saw me at about the same time I saw her and we finally got to meet in person. I won't mention her name for privacy reasons but she knows who she is and I want to thank her and let her know that she helped make for an awesome night - so thank you!

After Kyle finished with the young hockey team - he came over to where she, my seat mate and I were standing and chatting and saw that I was wearing my commemorative Kyle Turris 100th NHL game jersey. He then signed it with his name, number and "100". The feeling I had at that moment is inexplicable. It was almost a "coming full circle" type moment for me.

So to Kyle & his girlfriend: I thank you for the amazing people that you are and the wonderful way in which you make each fan feel important and appreciated. NHL athletes, their families and loved ones are by far the classiest yet.

To my seat-mate who made the whole thing possible: girl, you already know I love you! But now I owe ya one... <3

Really.... Over 1000 page views but only 6 comments? We can do better than that!

Earlier today I sent out an email to the masses asking for your help. As a Coalition we've been quiet as the NHL and the City of Glendale worked out their purchase and lease agreements. Now we have a new threat to the sale - they've been around all along but now they can file suit and possibly stall the sale further - The Goldwater Institute. Please see our website for more information.

All I ask is for a simple comment - is that too much to ask? And no - I don't care what you naysayers think. I'm not asking for your opinion. Frankly, I've not heard anything new from you so don't even bother. We're trying to do something for our team. If you don't like it - go bitch about it where someone actually cares what you have to say. To you all I have to say is this: (fart noise.)

Yep. That's where my maturity level is at with you people at this point. You're gonna get the fart noise. I'm tired of arguing.
